Video techniques and influences

I decided to look at several music videos that I like and discussed how they have inspired me. This is mainly in terms of cinematography and predominantly mise-en-scene through costume, locations, lighting.

Props

I have decided to use some props in my music video to make the narrative more realistic. I decided that I would like to use a car in my video as it is conventional for Alternative American rock bands to use cars in their music video's. The beer bottle represents his loneliness and depression as when people have had a huge loss, a lot of people turn to alcohol which also people can relates too.

Chosen location

I decided to choose Hull Marina as a location for my music video because of its scenic view with all the boats and it is a quiet place people like to go for walks. I thought this would be a really good place to film as it would be a pretty and nice place for someone to propose and then go back to to remember those happy times. However further down the river is the Humber bridge where a lot of people have committed suicide showing that the river could be seen as a place of loss reflecting my narrative. Hull marina is also easy to access.
Another location I decided to use is Costa coffee, a nice place to go for a coffee and talk to people and have a laugh but again another easy place to go to to remember and reminisce. A coffee shop can also be a place people go alone to think and try and figure their life out.

Shooting organisation

I used social media to organise shooting as it is a cheap way to communicate with people. Samuel is not in any of my classes at college as he is an AS student therefore do not have chance to communicate and organise with him verbally. I can use this chat to give my actor descriptions of what to wear and expect when we film thus saving us time on the day of filming. Facebook, the social media site that I am using to communicate with my actor also allows me to add other people to the chat, letting me add my actress so she knows who that actor is as they have never met before and lets her know what to wear and expect too.

For my video I decided that I would like to use an American classic car as it is conventional of the alternative american rock. My Dad, from his days in the TA's and working at RAF Leconfield has a wide range of contacts and one of his former collogues and friend collects and restores classic cars. My Dad's friend John has a large plot of land where he restores classic cars, both English and American so I decided to email him to see if he had any american classic cars in and if he would allow me to film. John agreed to let me film a car he had recently bought, a 1959 black Chevrolet. I went to film the following Saturday where he allowed me to drive the car and film my actor in the car. (I have coloured Johns email out for his privacy)

Cast list

Change in the cast. Late on in filming my actor could no longer film when I need him to so I have had to change my actor. My new actor is the boyfriend of my actress, this will make the relationship in the video seem more real as they already have the chemistry between them and will not feel awkward laughing and hugging each other. (added under Laura)

weather forecast

Unfortunately, I had to change my main actor half way through filming, I was able to keep my footage with my actress but had to re-film a lot with a new actor.

Social media

Social media I have used

I used social media to share my survey when conducting my audience research.  I used Facebook because I have a Facebook account and can share with my friends who are part of my target audience. The use of social media also allowed me to share my survey world wide because I have friends from many other countries including America, Germany, Australia, Thailand, Scotland and England that took my survey.

Narrative analysis

I chose to analyse this video because it has a clear narrative that the audience can follow and lyrics relate to the narrative.

Sven Carlsson suggests that music videos in general, fall in to two rough groups: Performance and Conceptual clips. This music video Carlsson would argue that this is a narrative clips as it was filmed in a studio and has a narrative. The video follows a group of girls who move into a house next to a group of boys for the summer, the girl and the boy fall in love and have a summer romance before having to go back to their lives. The narrative is a love story.
Tim O'Sullivan argues that all media texts tell us some kind of story through careful mediation. His theory can be applied to this video's narrative as it tells us a story of a boy and girl who fall in love and have a summer romance but have to part ways and go back to their everyday lives at the end of summer.
This links to Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposition as he believes all stories operate to certain clear binary opposites. In relation to the video, the young college girl falls in love with a rock star but both have to go back to reality of being on tour and going back to college after their summer romance.

Pam Cook argues the standard Hollywood structure. She says that music video's should have:
  • Linearity of cause and effect within an overall trajectory of enigma resolution.
  • A high degree of narrative closure.
  • A fictional world that contains verisimilitude, especially governed by spatial and temporal coherence.
This relates to the video as there is a fictional world created where the the girl falls in love with the boy, something that most people can relate to.
